Dutasteride is a 5-Alpha reductase enzyme which is designed to prevent the conversion of testosterone to it’s more androgenic counterpart Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the cause of male pattern hair loss and benign prostate enlargement and Dutasteride is approved for treating benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH). Dutasteride has similar action to Finasteride but differs in that Finasteride targets specifically the scalp and prostate where Dutasteride targets the entire body. Of interest to bodybuilders is the fact that dutasteride can reducing the androgenic effects of the DHT conversion and reduce oily skin and acne as well as a reduction in hair loss to male pattern balding caused by steroid cycles.
In comparison of Dutasteride and Finasteride, one study 5 mg of dutasteride daily resulted in a 98.4% inhibition of DHT levels where .5 mg lowered levels by 94.7%. Where as 5 mg of Finasteride resulted in only 70.8% inhibition of DHT. The negative side effect is a lowering of strength and muscle gain, users who take Dutasteride can suffer from a lowering of muscle gain and lack of libido. It is reported most bodybuilders take .5 mg every one or two days and take it as long as they are on steroid cycle.
